Mills & Mill Museum
In the hinterland of Julianadorp, many windmills contribute to the typical Dutch landscape.
These windmills played a very important role in land reclamation. Water-lifting mills were pumping stations and remained active until the 19th century, when they were eventually replaced by steam engines.
Not all mills could be preserved, but some have been lovingly restored. Those who want to know more should visit Schermerhorn, located east of Julianadorp. There, you can find a functioning mill where you can watch the water being lifted through glass panes in the floor, giving an impression of how challenging it was to reclaim land from the sea.
The museum is open daily and since almost everyone associates Holland with windmills, a visit to the museum mill is a must.
Ship Museums & Underwater Aquarium
Equally exciting is the Marine Museum in Den Helder, where you can also explore the inside of a submarine, or the Napoleonic Fort "Kijkduin" with its underwater aquarium.
Ships and their history can be admired in several museums, and the replica of the "Prins Willem" in Cape Holland Treasure Park is sure to delight not only children's hearts.
Käthe Kruse Dolls and Toys
In Den Helder, a visit to the Käthe Kruse Toy and Doll Museum is also recommended.
Excursion to Texel to the Seal Rehabilitation Center
On the island of Texel, the westernmost of the West Frisian Islands, you can find the seal rehabilitation center EcoMare with its natural history museum. The center takes care of animals that have been smeared with oil or abandoned by their mothers. An attraction not only for children: the aquarium. Learn more at www.ferienhaus-texel.org.
Zuiderzee Museum - Journey into the Past
To get a true picture of Holland, one should not miss a visit to the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen (see also the photo at the top of the page).
Zuiderzee is the former name of today's Ijsselmeer, and the open-air museum presents old Holland with its buildings and trades.
Historical crafts are also demonstrated during the main season. Actors then become villagers, and the insight into the past becomes more realistic.
The distance to the North Sea dunes is approximately 950m.
Distances are about 1 km to the shopping center and town center, 5 km to Den Helder (from there a ferry goes to Texel), 30 km to Alkmaar and 80 km to Amsterdam... everything else is easily accessible by bicycle.
Directions via Amsterdam
Take the A9 towards Alkmaar, then at the roundabout (3rd exit) onto the N9 towards Den Helder, continue straight until the "Julianadorp Zuid" exit, then proceed on "Callantsoger Vaart" with a short right/left curve towards the dunes (follow the "Strand" / "Richting Julianadorp" signs), turn into Van Forrestweg and then you'll find Yperhof on the left side.
