The Lombard eastern shore of Lake Maggiore stretches from Sesto Calende at the southern tip of the lake to Zenna at the border with Switzerland, covering a length of about 65 km.
Compared to the opposite Piedmontese western shore, it appears wilder and more pristine. Up to Laveno, the Lombard shore is surrounded by gentle hills. The presence of reed thickets is also characteristic of this part, which, thanks to its wealth of prehistoric and Roman artifacts, is extremely interesting.
Numerous medieval buildings provide deep insights into their era. Further north, the lakeshore becomes much steeper.
The hinterland also bears almost alpine features. Between the frequently over 1000 m high and forested mountains lie the Valcuvia, the Valtravaglia, and the Val Veddasca, which reach up to
Lake Maggiore. In this section, nature exudes its charms in a special way.
About 25 km east of Laveno lies Varese, the capital of the province of the same name. To the north of the city rises the Campo dei Fiori mountain massif (1226 m), with which the pre-Alpine region ends, and to the west lies Lake Varese. The city of Luino, located at the mouth of the Tresa in a spacious bay, has been considered the economic center of the eastern Lake Maggiore since its industrialization and railway networking in the second half of the 19th century. Luino is well-known and extremely popular, especially thanks to its market, which was authorized by Emperor Charles V as early as 1541. Every Wednesday since then, numerous stalls around Piazza Garibaldi offer a wide range of goods, from food and household items
to clothing and leather goods. The city is particularly proud of the two writers born here, Piero Chiara and Vittorio Sereni, as well as their honorary citizen, the Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Dario Fo.
Holiday destination
Within walking distance, there are several restaurants, bars, and a self-service market, as well as numerous other leisure activities. You can leave your car parked during your stay and fully relax. Maccagno is located at the entrance of the wooded Veddasca Valley. The town is divided into two halves by the Giona River, with shops, sports fields, and tourist information in the upper part, while Maccagno Inferiore is framed by the "Torre Imperiale" and the old district with its narrow streets surrounding the small tourist harbor. From there, the ferry departs to Luino, Cannobio, and the islands Isola Bella, Isola Madre, and Isola dei Pescatori in the southern part of Lake Maggiore. Maccagno is the ideal starting point for various leisure activities.
For hikers and mountain bikers, the surrounding mountains are a paradise. For shopping, one can head to the famous market in Luino on Wednesdays or take the ferry right from the spot to the romantic town of Cannobio on Sundays. Varese (50 min.) and Milan (2 hrs.) are also great for shopping and sightseeing. For water sports enthusiasts and climbing fans: SUP rental on-site (from about early July to mid-August), surfboard and boat rental on the lakeside promenade, and a climbing park with 100 courses, all within easy reach.
