Easily accessed from both Fort Augustus and Inverness, South Loch Ness is an area of outstanding natural beauty with heather covered hills, sparkling lochs, deep dark forests and panoramic views that will take your breath away. With such a beautiful and wild landscape it is little wonder that many people come to the area to walk and see the rich diversity of wildlife and flora.
Fort Augustus takes its name from a fort built after the defeat of the 1715 Jacobite uprising. Some parts were incorporated into the Benedictine Abbey, which dates back to 1876.
The Caledonian Canal, and an impressive flight of Telford designed locks that cleverly assist the water traffic from one vertical level to another, divide the village in two.
Fort Augustus is at the foot of Loch Ness. You can fly to Inverness and it is one hours drive from there. Buses come from Inverness and from Fort William, both 30 miles away. There are scenic routes from both East and west side of Central Scotland but allow 3.5 hours from Edinburgh or Glasgow, enjoying the drive through Loch Lomond or the Trossachs Mountain Range, and evocative Glencoe. From Fort William follow the road to Inverness and just as you come into the village turn sharp right and the Abbey is facing you.
