The “Green Room” has a double bed, and again it's own luxurious en suite shower room, with charming touches such as stained glass windows. Situated in a valley between 2 rivers (La Gloire and La Douve) Les Belles Rivieres has the best of both worlds - beautiful Normandy countryside, fishing ports etc. along with the rich historic value that Normandy has on offer. Equidistant from the unspoilt east and west coastlines of the Cotentin peninsula, “La Douve” cottage is ideally situated to explore this beautiful region. The property is situated between two lovely market towns, Valognes (known as the Versailles of the north on account of it's beautiful architecture,) and Bricquebec, with it's ancient castle from the 100 years war, dominating the skyline. To the west the chic resort of Carteret is a must for great restaurants, boutiques, with endless sandy beaches, wild dunes and cliffs either side. Port Racine Europe's smallest fishing port, Cherbourg with the forts that bankrupted Louis16th, Napoleanic forts along with Hitler's fortifications The Atlantic Wall, the 100 years war castles, Roman remains, Bayeux Tapestry, Barfleur where William the Conqueror set sail from, St Vaast la Hougue a UNESCO site...they are all here and all less than an hour from the front door!
Then there is the conservation areas and UNESCO sites locally - for example Head Office of Park Naturel Cotentin & Bessin is just a short drive down the N13 where you will find Carentan the market town with 7 rivers converging, in the winter months the whole of the area sees the flooding of the marshlands with migratory birds and the big skies reflected in the water, in the summer lush meadows with world class trotting horses and Normandy cows peacefully grazing...it's great both times of the year!
Inland, the landscape is defined by traditional agricultural practices, which over the centuries have created the 'bocage', a well preserved network of small fields, hedgerows and ancient sunken lanes. Dairy herds are the backbone of Norman farming and the world-reknowned Camembert and Creme Fraiche must be sampled along with a good bottle of cider (or Calvados!), purchased from one the many local producers. Normandy boasts many fine manoirs, Châteaux and gardens, many of which are open to the public.

From Caen… take the N13, direction to Cherbourg. After approximately an hour you will come to a sign to turn off to Valognes, do not take this, but instead continue for about a kilometre and take the next turning marked for Bricquebec. At the top of the ramp turn left onto the D902. After approximately 7 kilometres you will reach the village of Negreville and just after the speed sign marked 70 a crossroads, turn right onto the D146. Follow this road around a couple of tight corners, up the hill until you reach a Y junction at the top, bear left (this is still the D146), in the direction of La Croix Jacob. Go down the hill, at the bottom there are two sharp corners, please take care as they are totally blind, and after this you will cross a small bridge over the River Gloire. After this there are two driveways on the right. Please take the second driveway and go to the top. You have reached La Ferme Baubet and Les Belles Rivieres .

I fell in love with the area whilst working on the HBO Band of Brothers series in 2002, part of which describes the D-day landings on nearby Utah beach and the subsequent battle for the peninsular which is now my home. The peacefulness of the countryside and the emptiness of the local beaches combined with a way of life that has changed little over the last few hundred years makes it ideal retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Because I work in film production, my work schedule can be quite hectic and unpredictable, and it is usually with a huge sigh of relief that I return to my peaceful haven to unwind! I hope you will enjoy the farm and the surroundings as much as I do, & whilst I live on site, rest assured your gites have their own private spaces.
